Understanding Logic: Normally Closed vs. Open in 4V210-08
A frequent source of confusion is the default state of a 5/2 way valve like the Airtac 4V210-08. Unlike 2/2 valves, 5/2 valves don't follow a simple NC/NO logic—they have a "Home" position.
Standard 5/2 Logic
By default (De-energized), the 4V210-08 connects Port P to Port B. Air is flowing to one side of your cylinder, keeping it in its "home" position (usually retracted). When you apply power to the coil, it shifts, connecting Port P to Port A, causing the cylinder to extend.
Can I make it Normally Open?
Yes, by simply swapping the air lines at Ports A and B. If you want the cylinder to be extended when the power is OFF, you connect the "extend" port of the cylinder to Port B. This flexibility is what makes the 4V210-08 so versatile for safety-critical pneumatic designs.
